We would love to use a newer kernel version, but in terms of stability for our existing customer base, we can only offer this with a new major version.
The problem is, that the driver support can change in both ways, means newer cards get supported, but also other cards not anymore or in a different way.
This way we must do all the compatibility testing again and we can not just upgrade as there might be customers out there where their currently running system would not work anymore.
Once we work on ASG V8, than we will use a newer kernel with improved hardware support.
Until than we do some backports from time to time, if they are feasible.
I hope that is understandable

i can understand some of the astaro statements here...
if i have to build a high end professional firewall with 1gbps interfaces then i will not choose those cheap realtek nics (what puts lots to strain on the cpu etc) but will use some quality intel nics. and they are fully supported.
of course it's annoying for people who like to use those realtek 1gbps nics (me too) but it's likely home users rather then blue chip companies customers. just lets hope that in the future these nics will be supported but i understand why astaro doesn't have a hurry with it.
just my 1penny.
