Default WebAdmin Login spikes CPU and drops packets while it spikes

I'm running ASG 7.403 in a MS Virtual Server VM. Often when I attempt to login via WebAdmin, the login takes a couple of minutes, displaying that wait or cancel dialog sometimes several times. While it is doing this, it seems to hold all traffic running through it; web pages don't load, torrent traffic stops, MSN signs out.

When I do eventually get in, I notice that the CPU is pegged at 100% and the system is very sluggish. After I get in it does settle down again withing a minute or so, but sometimes I don't get in at all. Sometimes I'm given that wait or cancel message over and over and have to power cycle the VM to get any joy from it.

On my dashboard the only services I have enabled are:
Firewall
Intrusion Protection
IM/P2P Control
HTTP Proxy
Anti-Spyware

I have run Smoothwall in this configuration for some time without any problems, except when a NIC passed away.

Anyone got any ideas?

What do you have in 'Local networks' on the 'Global' tab of 'Intrusion Protection'?

When this has happened, could you tell from the executive report whether the Astaro was already pegged when you tried to login?

No it looks like it only spiked when I initiated the login.

However it was spiked for about 8 mins at 2:15 am when nobody was awake. All that would have been running is torrents and possibly AV and MS updates.

Astaro does log maintenance, etc. in the middle of the night.

Oh yes, that makes sense I supppose.

What do you think I should try to narrow down what is causing it on login?

Is there a way to log CPU usage of the individual processes so we can see what's doing it?
