Default IRC and DCC and socks

for some reason i cant get these all to work together. i am trying to get DCC over IRC to work through the socks proxy (using mirc as a client).
i set mirc up to go through the socks for dcc, and when i dcc chat from an external client to the internal one, it works (as the dcc chat request is sent over regular irc, then the internal client connects outbound to the external client, as per normal). this part uses regular NAT and thus it works fine.
when i initiate the chat from the internal client (and it sends the req for the external client to connect back to the internal client) it fails. i thought socks would allow this to work. am i mistaken? is there a better way to do this?

Try setting your IRC client to use external ip as I would suspect the external client recieves and tries to connect to your internal address.

The IRC client is using the external IP. Seems like this may be a problem in my setup of the socks proxy. Any ideas ?
